Searching on Google when uninspired has led me to discover many concepts and ideas I cannot imagine living without today (minimalism, flash fiction, blogging, journaling, etc.). One of them, found somewhere in all the searches I’ve done to find something that would inspire me to write, was entrepreneur, bestselling author, venture capitalist and podcaster James Altucher’s habit of writing 10 ideas a day. You can read the entire process on his blog here. In a nutshell, what he does is write down 10 new ideas every day, producing 3650 ideas a year.
I’d loved the idea but it was only in March that I finally came around to starting this habit myself, and so far, I’m really enjoying myself. It doesn’t even take five minutes to take a pen and notepad and write down the first ten ideas that come to mind. I follow Osborn’s brainstorming technique: generating ideas first and evaluating them later. I choose a different topic every day; sometimes my topic is to think of more topics. I’ve used some of the ideas in my writing, studying, and life in general, so it’s been an useful exercise. It’s actually fun – sometimes I enjoy writing down ideas so much that I feel like going on and on.
So today, since not much was happening in my life worth sharing, I decided to share a list of topics to generate 10 ideas for. I’d wanted to share list-making prompts since a long time, but was not sure if it was the best thing to post here, but I decided to go ahead with it anyways. So here are 20 topics for you to make your own lists. Don’t think about how good or bad they are: the rule is quantity first, quality later, so that you don’t immediately discard an absurd idea that’d later turn out to be gold. And don’t be too hard on yourself; this is supposed to be fun, not stressful.

Some of these ideas are mine while some were borrowed from here and there (unfortunately I don’t remember the sources). You can find several prompts on Altucher’s website too.
I’ve more prompts that I made on my own but don’t really have to do with generating ideas. They’re more about reflection – just like journaling, but in lists – moments you want to remember, lessons learned, things you’re proud you’ve done, etc. Do let me know if you like these prompts; I’ll start a series of posts with more prompts and share some of my lists too.
